What Screenwriting

Software is right for you?

Do I really need it?

All you need is concept, character, and conflict right? That, and 100 million dollars to make your story into a movie.

Screenwriting is just as much a technical skill as it is a creative process. The studio interested in producing your story wants to have it all, it’s your jo to present a a blueprint for an industrial process. And just like any blueprint, there are certain techniques to drawing no one wants their window view to be a bland white wall.

Screenwriting is not a novel, it’s 120 page haiku- poetry that mated with prose and had a baby that demands a nurse for every line you type, or else it will go unrealized- a fate that befalls tens of thousands of screenplays year after year.

Can’t I use WORD or Google Docs?

Sure- you can use a typewriter, if you like, but that won’t make you Stanley Kubric or Dalton Trumbo, but it will steal your precious time. Producers (and their readers) have read hundreds if not thousands of scripts, and nothing makes them close a manuscript faster than improper formatting. Unless you get your kicks off setting up margins and typing redundancies, you really ought to look into specialized software that can help you:

    • Store character names
    • Enhanced  real time collaborative process
    • Perfect margins every time
    • Hotkeys for switching between sections
    • Templates for different formats
    • Automatic scene numbering
    • Project files that contain all previous drafts
    • Note taking tools
    • You look like a pro at coffee shops.

Most of all, there is not excuse, there are so many free trials, if not completely free options to get you started today.

How to Choose the Right Screenwriting Software?

Selecting the right screenwriting software will get easier if you know your project requirements and your personal interests. Here are a few basic questions that you should ask yourself before choosing a screenwriting program:

Is this your first screenplay?

Are you collaborating or working alone?

Do you need a something that does not require a web connection?

How much is money a factor?

Do you need to have the Industry standard?

Are you self producing?
